  150. .SH "DESCRIPTION"
  151. .IX Header "DESCRIPTION"
  152. During normal operation OpenSSL (libssl and libcrypto) will allocate various
  153. resources at start up that must, subsequently, be freed on close down of the
  154. library. Additionally some resources are allocated on a per thread basis (if the
  155. application is multi-threaded), and these resources must be freed prior to the
  156. thread closing.
  157. .PP
  158. As of version 1.1.0 OpenSSL will automatically allocate all resources that it
  159. needs so no explicit initialisation is required. Similarly it will also
  160. automatically deinitialise as required.
  161. .PP
  162. However, there may be situations when explicit initialisation is desirable or
  163. needed, for example when some nondefault initialisation is required. The
  164. function \fBOPENSSL_init_ssl()\fR can be used for this purpose. Calling
  165. this function will explicitly initialise \s-1BOTH\s0 libcrypto and libssl. To
  166. explicitly initialise \s-1ONLY\s0 libcrypto see the
  167. \&\fBOPENSSL_init_crypto\fR\|(3) function.
  168. .PP
  169. Numerous internal OpenSSL functions call \fBOPENSSL_init_ssl()\fR.
  170. Therefore, in order to perform nondefault initialisation,
  171. \&\fBOPENSSL_init_ssl()\fR \s-1MUST\s0 be called by application code prior to
  172. any other OpenSSL function calls.
  173. .PP
  174. The \fBopts\fR parameter specifies which aspects of libssl and libcrypto should be
  175. initialised. Valid options for libcrypto are described on the
  176. \&\fBOPENSSL_init_crypto\fR\|(3) page. In addition to any libcrypto
  177. specific option the following libssl options can also be used:
  178. .IP "\s-1OPENSSL_INIT_NO_LOAD_SSL_STRINGS\s0" 4
  179. .IX Item "OPENSSL_INIT_NO_LOAD_SSL_STRINGS"
  180. Suppress automatic loading of the libssl error strings. This option is
  181. not a default option. Once selected subsequent calls to
  182. \&\fBOPENSSL_init_ssl()\fR with the option
  183. \&\fB\s-1OPENSSL_INIT_LOAD_SSL_STRINGS\s0\fR will be ignored.
  184. .IP "\s-1OPENSSL_INIT_LOAD_SSL_STRINGS\s0" 4
  185. .IX Item "OPENSSL_INIT_LOAD_SSL_STRINGS"
  186. Automatic loading of the libssl error strings. This option is a
  187. default option. Once selected subsequent calls to
  188. \&\fBOPENSSL_init_ssl()\fR with the option
  189. \&\fB\s-1OPENSSL_INIT_LOAD_SSL_STRINGS\s0\fR will be ignored.
  190. .PP
  191. \&\fBOPENSSL_init_ssl()\fR takes a \fBsettings\fR parameter which can be used to
  192. set parameter values. See \fBOPENSSL_init_crypto\fR\|(3) for details.
