  169. .SH "DESCRIPTION"
  170. .IX Header "DESCRIPTION"
  171. This command is generally equivalent to the external
  172. script \fBc_rehash\fR,
  173. except for minor differences noted below.
  174. .PP
  175. \&\fBopenssl rehash\fR scans directories and calculates a hash value of
  176. each \fI.pem\fR, \fI.crt\fR, \fI.cer\fR, or \fI.crl\fR
  177. file in the specified directory list and creates symbolic links
  178. for each file, where the name of the link is the hash value.
  179. (If the platform does not support symbolic links, a copy is made.)
  180. This command is useful as many programs that use OpenSSL require
  181. directories to be set up like this in order to find certificates.
  182. .PP
  183. If any directories are named on the command line, then those are
  184. processed in turn. If not, then the \fB\s-1SSL_CERT_DIR\s0\fR environment variable
  185. is consulted; this should be a colon-separated list of directories,
  186. like the Unix \fB\s-1PATH\s0\fR variable.
  187. If that is not set then the default directory (installation-specific
  188. but often \fI/usr/local/ssl/certs\fR) is processed.
  189. .PP
  190. In order for a directory to be processed, the user must have write
  191. permissions on that directory, otherwise an error will be generated.
  192. .PP
  193. The links created are of the form \fI\s-1HHHHHHHH.D\s0\fR, where each \fIH\fR
  194. is a hexadecimal character and \fID\fR is a single decimal digit.
  195. When a directory is processed, all links in it that have a name
  196. in that syntax are first removed, even if they are being used for
  197. some other purpose.
  198. To skip the removal step, use the \fB\-n\fR flag.
  199. Hashes for \s-1CRL\s0's look similar except the letter \fBr\fR appears after
  200. the period, like this: \fI\s-1HHHHHHHH.\s0\fR\fBr\fR\fID\fR.
  201. .PP
  202. Multiple objects may have the same hash; they will be indicated by
  203. incrementing the \fID\fR value. Duplicates are found by comparing the
  204. full \s-1SHA\-1\s0 fingerprint. A warning will be displayed if a duplicate
  205. is found.
  206. .PP
  207. A warning will also be displayed if there are files that
  208. cannot be parsed as either a certificate or a \s-1CRL\s0 or if
  209. more than one such object appears in the file.
  210. .SS "Script Configuration"
  211. .IX Subsection "Script Configuration"
  212. The \fBc_rehash\fR script
  213. uses the \fBopenssl\fR program to compute the hashes and
  214. fingerprints. If not found in the user's \fB\s-1PATH\s0\fR, then set the
  215. \&\fB\s-1OPENSSL\s0\fR environment variable to the full pathname.
  216. Any program can be used, it will be invoked as follows for either
  217. a certificate or \s-1CRL:\s0
  218. .PP
  219. .Vb 2
  220. \& $OPENSSL x509 \-hash \-fingerprint \-noout \-in FILENAME
  221. \& $OPENSSL crl \-hash \-fingerprint \-noout \-in FILENAME
  222. .Ve
  223. .PP
  224. where \fI\s-1FILENAME\s0\fR is the filename. It must output the hash of the
  225. file on the first line, and the fingerprint on the second,
  226. optionally prefixed with some text and an equals sign.

  233. .IX Item "-old"
  234. Use old-style hashing (\s-1MD5,\s0 as opposed to \s-1SHA\-1\s0) for generating
  235. links to be used for releases before 1.0.0.
  236. Note that current versions will not use the old style.
  237. .IP "\fB\-n\fR" 4
  238. .IX Item "-n"
  239. Do not remove existing links.
  240. This is needed when keeping new and old-style links in the same directory.

  242. .IX Item "-compat"
  243. Generate links for both old-style (\s-1MD5\s0) and new-style (\s-1SHA1\s0) hashing.
  244. This allows releases before 1.0.0 to use these links along-side newer
  245. releases.
  246. .IP "\fB\-v\fR" 4
  247. .IX Item "-v"
